HMB´S REVIEW
Discovering Messa felt like stepping into a parallel universe where doom metal gracefully blends with gothic atmospheres, jazz elements, and a bold sense of experimentation. Since their debut with Belfry in 2016, the Italian band has been pushing boundaries and defying genre labels. But it was with Close, released in 2022, that many, myself included, realized there was something truly special happening. The fusion of heavy doom, soaring vocals, touches of grindcore, and flawless execution revealed a band at the height of their creative powers.

So when The Spin was announced, their first release under the legendary Metal Blade Records, expectations were sky-high. And thankfully, the album not only meets those expectations, it surpasses them. The Spin shows Messa even more confident, refined, and committed to charting their own path. It may be slightly shorter than its predecessor, but it makes up for it with a stronger atmosphere, clearly incorporating post-punk and '80s darkwave influences while staying true to what makes the band unique.

From the very first seconds of 'Void Meridian', the immersion is immediate. The density of the riffs is balanced with ethereal, atmospheric passages that, track by track, build a cohesive and fluid sonic journey. Each song feels deliberately placed, guiding the listener through distinct emotional and musical landscapes that remain deeply interconnected.

Sara Bianchin’s voice remains one of the band’s greatest assets. Hypnotic, intense, and emotionally charged, she delivers stunning performances on tracks like 'At Races' and especially 'The Dress', where her expressiveness reaches new heights. Alberto Piccolo’s guitar work is equally captivating. His solos and melodies are full of character, perfectly complementing Sara’s voice and the band’s atmospheric soundscapes. The solo in 'The Dress', for instance, begins with delicate, improvised jazz tones wrapped in a dreamy, cinematic mood, slowly building into something grand and powerful.

Another highlight of The Spin is its production. Clean and meticulous, it gives each instrument space to breathe and shine, enhancing the intricacy of the arrangements and showcasing the band’s musical maturity.

In the end, The Spin isn’t just a continuation of Messa’s discography — it’s a powerful statement of identity. It’s an album that demands your full attention, rewards you with a deep, emotional, and unforgettable listening experience. For those seeking music that defies convention, embraces experimentation, and speaks directly to the soul, this record is essential. It’s poised to be one of the year’s standout albums.
