HMB´S REVIEW
Winter Storm the ninth album by Ensiferum, represents a powerful fusion of the band’s folk and melodic death metal roots with new influences they've acquired over the years. After nearly a five-year hiatus, the band returns with a conceptual work set in a frozen fantasy world, exploring themes of war, resilience, and ancient magic. The album is based on an unpublished story written by bassist Sami Hinkka, immersing listeners in an epic saga filled with captivating and heavy melodies.

Musically, Winter Storm combines traditional folk metal elements with a modern, richly detailed production. The band explores a more intricate and grandiose sound, a result of creative experimentation during the lockdown, which led to more elaborate compositions. The epic melodies and the blend of harsh and heroic vocals stand out, amplifying the album’s epic tone. While it contains dark and intense nuances, the album retains Ensiferum’s signature playful and energetic nature, delivering tracks that perfectly balance brutality and melody.

One of the album’s highlights is the contribution of Eleine's vocalist Madeleine Liljestam, who features on the track "Scars In My Heart," a slower and more emotive piece that sets itself apart from the rest of the album.

Winter Storm is a milestone for Ensiferum, showcasing their ability to evolve while staying true to their roots. It offers an immersive listening experience, perfect for long-time fans of the genre as well as newcomers.
