HMB´S REVIEW
Technical resurrection of a legendary trio

From the very first seconds of Dissonance Theory, I felt as if a portal had opened straight into the heart of technical metal, a space where surgical precision and pure sonic madness coexist in perfect harmony. The Swiss band Coroner, formed in 1983 in Zurich, has always been an entity apart within thrash: cerebral, refined, and daring. Owners of a legacy that influenced entire generations, the Swiss never followed trends and now, with their full-force return, they show that the flame of innovation still burns bright.

From history to the present: recalibrated identity

Coroner has always had one foot in warfare and another in the classroom: fast riffs, harsh vocals, and a drum section of near-military precision lived side by side with complex arrangements and progressive structures. On Dissonance Theory, that identity not only resurfaces but is renewed. The addition of drummer Diego Rapacchietti, replacing the legendary Marquis Marky, is one of the most visible gears in this update, his playing is less chaotic, more contained and technical, giving the sound a solid and contemporary foundation without losing the band’s characteristic heaviness.

Ron Royce’s vocals remain one of the band’s defining pillars. His hoarse, dry, and personality-driven delivery cuts through the riffs like a blade, keeping the ferocity intact. There’s a natural authority in his tone, something that sounds lived-in, yet still hungry for chaos.

Experimentation that educates the assault

Entering the universe of Dissonance Theory feels like witnessing high-precision machinery in full operation. The riffs are heavy, intricate, and urgent at the same time. The rhythm section never pauses and demands the listener’s full attention and the production is crystal clear, allowing textures that are usually buried under weight to shine. The alternation between thrash fury and almost atmospheric passages creates a layered sonic experience, the more you listen, the more hidden details you uncover between the measures.

Between reason and collapse: the theme behind the chaos

The lyrics of Dissonance Theory follow the introspective and philosophical path that has always accompanied Coroner. The album delves into human dilemmas: alienation, mental disorder, the conflict between logic and emotion and turns these tensions into music. There’s a constant sense that the title is not merely a metaphor: it defines the very essence of the record. The sound and the theme revolve around contradiction, the friction between thought and instinct, between control and collapse.

Progress and reverence: a hard balance to achieve

What impresses me most about Dissonance Theory is how it unites the weight of tradition with contemporary aspiration. The compositions maintain the original spirit of Coroner, yet never sound trapped in time: there are catchy choruses, elevating solos, and modern grooves that do not betray the band’s legacy. In other words, the trio seems to have learned to walk on its own without needing to look back at the mirror of the ’80s.

Conclusion: the affirmation that there’s still vigor

Dissonance Theory is not just a comeback album, it’s a demonstration that Coroner still possesses vigor, inventiveness, and relevance. For those who follow technical and progressive metal, this album feels like a breath of cold air: the perfect blend of brutality, intellect, and melody.

Listening to Dissonance Theoryis like revisiting an old master who has returned with new tools and you realize the mastery remains intact. It’s a record for the ears, the body, and the mind.
